The museum, which is mainly concerned with the history of the Manchester regiment, is housed in Ashton Town Hall. It tells of how, in 1840, the regiment was based at Ladysmith Barracks, on Mossley Road due to the unrest of the 1830's and 40's, and the Chartist movement. The museum examines the major wars that affected the regiment and is comprises several life-like replicas, including a first world war trench and a bombshelter dating from the second world war. There is a Malayan jungle reconstruction and most of the exhibits are interactive in some way or other. The museum has sections that are not directly concerned with the Manchester regiment, including Women at War and War Poets. Entry is free, the museum is open from 10.00am until 4.00pm. |
