Mottram Court House

court houseThe court house is situated in the centre of Mottram's historically preserved centre. The village appears as it did in the eighteenth century, due to a successful environmental experiment by Tameside. The court house was a Sunday School for Methodists between 1789 and 1791, and the pole that stands near the building is the crown or Coronation pole for George the Third and was erected in 1760.

mottramThe drinking fountain celebrates the year 1888, when Mottram first recieved piped water. Previous to this, a water cart had to bring fresh water from Spout Green, a hamlet on Old Road, for the price of half an old penny to three gallons.

The fountain is decorated with a carving of the water cart.
