Huddersfield narrow canal restoration

restoration of canal in stalybridgeIn 1974 a group of five canal enthusiasts from the Huddersfield Canal Society, decided to restore and reopen the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

The canal which goes through Aston-under-Lyne, Stalybridge and Mossley had been rendered unusable in earlier years by:-

  • Building a car park on top of it in Stalybridge.
  • Blocking up all the locks in Mossley.
  • Building part of a power station on top of it on the stretch between mossley and Stalybridge.
  • Blocking up of a number of tunels including the Stanedge tunnel through the pennines.

The renovation involved nineteen individual projects, the most difficult of which were the reopening of the Standege Tunnel and the repositioning of the canal through Stalybridge town centre. The thirty million pound project is recieving fifteen million pounds from the millennium commission, and twelve million from English partnerships. The project is now complete, an interesting review is available on the Pennine waterways website.
