st. michael's mottramSt. Michael's of Mottram is also known as themottram Cathedral of East Cheshire. It was first mentioned in 1291 but it is thought to be older, having a Norman front. Most of the exterior is of the fifteenth century, wheras the inside was rebuilt in the mid nineteenth century, with the exception of the chancel piers and arch, two of the church's best assets. There are stone effigies of the knight Sir Ralph de Asshehton and Lady de Staveleigh. Bread racks still survive from 1619 and 1737, when they were used to feed the poor on Sundays.
